"Kiểm điểm nhạc giới" (Reviewing The Musical World) - Á Cầm (1946)

Many musicians have taken up playing music in dancehalls. Art for art's sake it seems has not survived. Seeing a "sideline" that might help alleviate their already impoverished lives, musicians gathered in groups of seven or eight, have taken on this jobs, every evening, they bring their art to people just fooling around. That's a truly heartbreaking comical scene for those who played music.

A less miserable situation is that of musicians playing in tea rooms. Here, one could hear classical music presented with a certain degree of skill. However, even those with musical ability and discerning ears were still not satisfied.

"Kiểm điểm nhạc giới," Khuyến nhạc March 1, 1946, 4.

This editorial article was written by either Thẩm Oánh or Nguyễn Văn Giệp, the two most active participants in the Hội Khuyến Nhạc in 1945 and 1946. The latter was a professional musician who had a solid education in western classical music, who was a pedagogue, and who played music professionally in dancehalls and tearooms. The former was a songwriter who strongly advocated for the elevation of music appreciation according to western classical music standards as a way to elevate Vietnam as a nation to be taken seriously in the global community of nations.

The unaddressed demon in the room was a societal attitude of "xướng ca vô loại" - musicians as singers of no class. Looking at the Chinese word that vô loại derives from - 無類 has a more strongly pejorative meaning someone or something that is not fit to be called human. Music as a profession was at the lowest level of human activity.

This attitude was sharply at odds with the way that Europeans regarded music, especially the music of the western classical tradition. Reverence for classical music gradually came to be an important marker of class distinction in Vietnam. In 1946 this was less clearly the case and required musicians like Thẩm Oánh and Nguyễn Văn Giệp to actively propagandize for the status of western classical musicianship.

Serious, highly trained musicians should not have to debase their art. Underlying this outlook was the implication that a civilized society should underwrite the efforts of the serious musician, either as active patrons of this art or through government support. Some of this government support has come to pass. Patronage has been slower but it is also growing.

There is a strange contradiction at work here. This editorial and activity was occurring at the very moment of a revolution, a revolution very poplar among nearly all Vietnamese at that moment, against a European colonizer. Along with arguing for the necessity of western (European!) classical music, they also argue that Vietnamese music prior to European contact and European influence was deficient and perhaps merited the insult of "xướng ca vô loại." I guess this is equivalent to using the master's weapons to fight the master?

Á Cầm is a fun pseudonym meaning Asian lute.

Kiếm nguồn nhạc mới (Seeking A New Music Source) (1949)

The Việt Music Group of the Radio Station
The Voice of Vietnam

We greatly welcome the happy, cheerful music works or bold marches that you all have sent for presentation.

We sincerely hope that music composers will focus on these kinds of music so that together we can find a new musical source.

nguồn: Việt Nhạc 16 tháng 2 1949

This Voice of Vietnam was the voice of the State of Vietnam / État du Viêt-Nam led by Bảo Đại under French guidance. They funded the radio station as well as the musicians who performed on the broadcasts, most importantly the Ban Việt Nhạc - a group that ranged in size from 8 to 10 musicians who performed in a semi-classical style.

Việt Nhạc was a bi-monthly newspaper that highlight the activities of this group and the radio station. It was compiled and edited by Thẩm Oánh and Vũ Khánh who created most of the content along with Trần Văn Nhơn. The majority of pages were devoted to articles and advocacy pieces written by Thẩm Oánh often using pseudonyms. There were very few issues that did not print not print a song and 85 percent of the songs were written by Thẩm Oánh.

The advertisement presented above dates from the period of the Central Provisional Government of Vietnam / Gouvernement central provisoire du Viêt‑Nam that preceded the State of Vietnam. The songs published in Việt Nhạc were in the "happy," "bold" style advocated here. They sought to create a rousing unifying body work musical works that could compete with the songs of the Việt Minh. They did not succeed at that goal.

The Ban Việt Nhạc did feature these works along with rousing pre-revolutionary Vietnamese songs and a sprinkling of less militant songs from Việt Minh controlled areas (notably songs by Phạm Duy). They also presented a number of romantic songs that are today known as nhạc tiền chiến that I'm sure went down much better with the listening audience. The Ban Việt Nhạc included vocalists and instrumentalists of the highest quality. It's a pity that they were never recorded.

Với chủ trương phục hưng nền Quốc nhạc Tivi (With the Object of Reviving National Music On TV) - Trùng Dương (1969)

Such an exemplary group we'll probably be unable to mobilize, but the difficulty lies in the price. We need thosemusicians who have been playing for a long time who are still with us; those familiar with the manner of playing olden talented amateurs music, who finger haven't been poisoned by the careless modifications of traditional music today.

It is these people who make the ideals of traditional music live again. And that is what could really be called traditional ensembles and singing, not like the... attacking-the-enemy music in the manner of Năm Cơ and Văn Vỹ.

nguồn: Trùng Dương, "Với chủ trương phục hưng nền Quốc nhạc Tivi có nên nhận thêm vài ban tài tử lớn," [With Object of Reviving National Music on TV, should we accept a few big talented amateur groups] Đuốc nhà nam 13 tháng 4 1969.

Nhạc tài tử is the musical system underlying cải lương theater. It is also a refined art form on its own. This opinion piece interests me because he describes a couple of musicians that I love in a derisive way. However, the derision is accurate. Listen here:

These two along with Bảy Bá are the backing track of hundreds of cải lương and vọng cổ recordings. I think playing on recordings accustomed them to time limits and made their playing more rapid fire and virtuosic. At times it has the energy of Flatt and Scruggs - Foggy Mountain Breakdown.

The "đánh giặc" metaphor is really funny. It's a battlecry to attack the enemy, but within this music there's, of course, no enemy. The abundant ability of these musicians results in an aggressive form of musicianship. I think the writer is right in wanting to promote musicians from an earlier time who would likely play in more relaxed manner. I have no idea what the Saigon Television channel decided to do.

Nó (Waif) - Anh Bằng + Hoàng Minh (1967)

Slow-Rock

Thằng bé âm thầm đi vào ngõ nhỏ
The little one walks silently in the narrow alley
Tuổi ấu thơ đà mang nhiều âu lo.
His youthful days bear many worries.
Ngày nó sống kiếp lang thang, ngẩn ngơ như chim xa đàn, nghĩ mình tủi thân muôn vàn.
He lives fated to wander, bewildered like bird who has strayed from the flock, in eternal self-pity

Mẹ nó qua đời khi còn tấm nhỏ
His mother died when he was still young
Một chén cơm chiều nên lòng chưa no.
One bowl of evening rice, stomach not yet full.
Cuộc sống đói rách bơ vơ, hỏi ai, ai cho nương nhờ, chuỗi ngày tăm tối vô bờ.
A life of helpless hunger in tatters, one asks, who could he lean on in the limitless dark days

Night after night he sleeps on a tattered mat, curled up, orphaned without a home
Thân em lá cỏ bạn quen ai có đâu xa.
His body a blade of grass, friend nowhere around.
The lads Tư and Tám yesterday were on the street hanging around.

Miền Bắc điêu tàn nên đời nó khổ
The North is in ruins so his life is miserable
Một chén cơm chiều nên lòng chưa no
One bowl of evening rice, stomach not yet full.
Often he cries while dreaming, mother your beloved child will you wait, will you wait until the end.

nguồn: Anh Bằng, Hoàng Minh, "Nó," Saigon: Mỹ Hạnh, 1973

The words "nó," before we only used it to name the category of people that we despise or look down on, it was not often used to name objects.
It was a challenge translating this two letter title. Vietnamese people employ "nó" in many ways these days, sometimes in this derogatory way, sometimes just to fill in for he or she in the case a person of lower status (say, a child) or to fill in for "it."

Gaunt, ragged orphans were a part of Vietnamese life. The lyrics of this song make it clear that this pitiable scene is located north of the 17th parallel. In socialist society one imagines that there were be a safety net to provide for orphaned children. By the same token, children were sometimes shunned and abandoned because of their family status, or as the result of land reform. Was this song simply created for psy-war purposes.

The Republic of Vietnam had plenty of vulnerable orphans, although I imagine that they would have been incorporated into the "informal economy" (think of Dickens - Fagan, Oliver Twist, the Artful Dodger). Nevertheless, Vietnam at that time was in the midst of a civil war, so the heartlessness had to be found on the other side. The song cover shows a toddler who while looking forlorn does not look to be un cared for. The urban setting looks much more like Saigon and Hanoi.

Gánh chè khuya (Midnight Custard Vendor) - Thu An (1962)

Út Bạch Lan:

Ai ăn chè bột khoai, buồn tàu đậu xanh nước dừa, đường cát hông?
Who'll eat some taro flower custard, mung beans in coconut milk, ground sugar?

Út Trà Ôn:

Nghe tiếng rao trong đêm dài u buồn
Hearing the hawker's cry on a long sad night
Đêm từng đêm thầm vang bên phố nhỏ
Each night echoing down on the narrow lane
Nghe tiếng rao như một lời kêu than
Hearing that cry like a lamentation
Cho số kiếp phụ phàng
For an unfortunate fate

Út Bạch Lan:

Em đi bán chè thưng
I sell sugary custard
Nặng lo chữ hiếu cho tròn
Bear the weight of filial piety to the end
Và em lo thân sống
And I have to worry about about staying alive
Cho tròn nợ áo cơm
To pay off the debt of food and clothing

Câu 1:
First part:

Each time I hear that cry at the top of the lane, my heart seems to remember her, a stranger who has ... gone
She also carried a load of custard to sell along this road
Em gái ấy ở trong cuối phố
She lived at the end of the lane
With her old mother, aged around sixty
Tóc chưa xuống khỏi bờ vai
Her hair hadn't yet reached her shoulders
Mà em đã gánh nặng rồi thương đau
But she bore that heavy load, pained
Vì nuôi mẹ khổ nghèo nên em phải chịu nhọc nhằn lo cho tròn câu hiếu thảo
To take care of her poor, miserable mother she had to wear herself out to show piety to the end

Câu 2:
Part 2:

Tuổi mới mười lăm vo cơm chưa sạch cám
Turning 15 she washed rice still mixed with bran
Yet she knew about to cook sweet porridge and carried it out to sell to customers on the street
Nhưng tội nghiệp thay, chữ a bê em chưa biết một vần
But it was real shame, of her ABC's she didn't know a word
But she worked hard, every evening studying with her old mother
Chỉ đọc được vần xuôi
Only reading a few syllables
Thấy thương em cố sức sống trong cảnh đói nghèo thất học
Seeing that she struggled in this situation of ignorance and want
I told her every day for a session
Come over to my house and I'd help her after lunch

[Thơ]
[Poem]

Em đến học được chừng mười bữa
She came around to learn for around ten sessions
Bỗng nhiên em liên tiếp vắng ba hôm
Suddenly she was absent for three days in a row
Tôi đón hỏi em vào lúc nữa đêm
I greeted her in the middle of the night
When she carried custard back home at midnight through the deserted neighborhood

Câu 4:
Part 4:

Lối: Nghe tôi hỏi em cúi đầu im lặng rồi ngẩng nhìn tôi qua ngấn lệ tuông ... trào
Hearing my question she lowered her head then looked up at me through a streams f overflowing tears
She answered me with a voice choked with emotion
Em nói em nghèo lắm không tiền mua giấy mực
She said I'm very poor with no money for paper or ink
Thì làm gì trả công thầy dạy dỗ cho em
How can I pay you back for teaching me

[Thơ Vân Tiên]
[Vân Tiên poem]

Thầy ơi má đã dặn khuyên
Teacher, my mother advised me
Dốt đành chịu dốt đừng phiền người ta
Ignorance, you should suffer it instead of troubling somebody else
Một con một mẹ đã già
You and your mother who is old
Đói nghèo chịu được ơn kia khó đền
Hunger and want we can stand, don't take favors that would be hard to repay

Câu 5:
Part 5:

No, I've instructed you in the hope you would become literate
Not so that you would have to pay me back with gifts or money
Vì thương em nghèo có hiếu lại hiền
Because I sympathized with you, a poor girl who's both dutiful and kind
Tôi nói chưa hết thì em đã khóc to hơn nữa
I hadn't finished speaking when she cried even louder
Và vội vàng quảy gánh chạy đi
And hurriedly she turn around and left with her load
On the empty road at midnight, I was all alone following her with my eyes as she disappeared into the shadows
With a feeling of pain and pity for such a sorrowful fate

Câu 6:
Part 6:

So from that evening I never saw her shadow again
Chừng hỏi thăm mới hay em bị đuổi nhà và đã ra đi ở mướn
Asking around I learned that she had been evicted and had to go out and work for hire
To get money to take care of her sick mother in the hospital
Nghe chuyện ấy lòng tôi nao nao buồn tủi
Hearing this my heart felt troubled and dejected
Pitying the lives of helpful youth
Rồi đêm đêm đi về trên xóm cũ
So each night coming home to the old neighborhood
Tôi bồi hồi nhớ lại tiếng em rao
I feel restless remembering her street hawking
Như còn vương vấn nơi phố lạnh canh buồn
Like it still haunts this lane, rattling on in sadness
"Em đi bán chè thưng
"I sell sugary custard
Nặng lo chữ hiếu cho tròn"
Bearing the weight of filial piety to the end"
Giờ em đi mất đâu còn
Now, who knows where you've gone
Nhưng tôi nhớ mãi tâm hồn thơ ngây
But I always remember that innocent soul

In my opinion, vọng cổ is the greatest musical achievement of the Vietnamese people in the 20th century. It is attributed to Cao Văn Lầu (Sáu Lầu) but I think it is fair to say that it has been shaped by many hands. It is a song or theatrical aria used in cải lương built around a structure that has been realized ten of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of ways. It similar to the blues in there being an audible, accepted structure as well as myriad ways of creating within that structure.

Vọng cổ balances strictness and elasticity. Framing the lyrics presented above there is a formal structure. Elements can be added and sometimes subtracted from that structure. It can open with a recited poem, a song, or even in this case the sound of an itinerant vendor hawking her wares. Câu 3 / the Third Part is replaced by a poem. When vọng cổ is performed as an instrumental, the instruments just play Cầu 3. I haven't notated this, but the ends of some phrases have to come to a unison on a series of pitches. A moment of intensification comes during the "lối" (path) where the unaccompanied voice intones, usually at a higher more dramatic pitch level, some part of the thematic meaning within the song.

Út Trà Ôn is the master of this genre. He could recite the traffic code and make it sound beautiful. Here he is briefly joined by another star of the cải lương stage - Út Bạch Lan. Út is an endearment - it refers to the last born child in the family, the runt. Trà Ôn is a Mekong delta city.

The song is like a one act play or monologue. The narrator living in a dense urban setting flashes back to an event that made a strong impression on him. Teens scraping out a living to help support their family was and I would think still is a part of the fabric of Vietnamese life. It used to be ubiquitous to hear vendors hawking their wares on the streets of Vietnam's cities. In the mid-1990s it was still common to hear the singsong of these street vendor cries. Locals barely noticed (until they wanted a little soup, a desert or to sharpen their knives) but as a foreigner I found this practice absolutely charming.

Street vendor calls hawking their wares had been common in many parts of the world (including Europe) but modernization has done it in -- modernization the form of the motorbike. The noise and the speed of these vehicles changed the pulse of city life. It also meant that it wasn't a big deal to fetch what you wanted for yourself instead of waiting for the vendor to stop by. Plus, you can't hear the vendor any more. There are some now that use amplification or prerecorded messages - but where' the beauty in that?

Returning to our song -- the narrator both pities and admires this 15 year old girl. "Có hiếu lại hiền" - "Hiếu" means dutiful, especially in the context of respect and caring for parents. "Hiền" describes somebody gentle and kind. He understands her circumstances and is impressed with how hard she struggles to take care of her elderly, worn-out mother. Having to help out with their survival from an early age she never received an education.

Living in the world firmly tied to her mother, both for survival, support and instruction, has limited her actions and agency in the world. The narrator willingly gives of himself and undoubtedly experiences no hardship of his own in trying to aid the girl. Nevertheless, her mother has instilled a sense of honor, a moral code whereby they cannot accept anything of value without being able to repay it, in turn, with something of value.

It appears that after her refusal of the narrator's kindness, the mother's and daughter's circumstances take a turn for the worse.

"Gánh" literally describes a burden carried upon the shoulders -- long bamboo pole with balanced, fairly heavy objects balanced at both ends.

nguồn ảnh: báo Lâm Đồng

The teenage vendor has limited life experience. The lyrics note that she doesn't even yet know how properly wash rice before cooking it (perhaps because rice is a luxury). This gentle girl has been pushed into the world to fight for survival walking for miles every night calling out "Ai ăn chè bột khoai, buồn tàu đậu xanh nước dừa, đường cát hông?"

some Hà Nội street cries

We have to imagine a very thin girl carrying a very heavy load.  Chè is a word used to describe many kinds of deserts. Their content is mostly liquid, and liquid is heavy. At one point it's described as "chè thưng" illustrated below.

Bản kê của Phòng Nạp bản (Thư viện Nam phần Việt Nam) về ấn phẩm, nhạc phẩm, đĩa hát nạp bản...)

I am grateful for the privilege of being permitted to research in the Trung Tâm Lưu Trữ Quốc Gia II (National Archive II) in Hồ Chí Minh City. The staff were extremely helpful and I was able research very productively during my brief visit.

I found a good deal of information in a file originally compiled by the Thư Viện Nam-Phần Việt-Nam - this would have been the state library for Cochinchina, later becoming the library for the Republic of Vietnam. This file registers the publications (print, audio) that were deposited there from the late 1940s through around 1959.

More than 1000 songs are listed in this file. The reasons for being listed are often not given, but in some cases the year, the publisher and creators are given. Otherwise, the criteria for inclusion are not always clear. Some important songs were published and not deposited or listed. But file provides a good picture of the music marketplace of the 1950s - both the hit songs and songs that were published but never popular. The sheet music of many of the latter may be forever lost.

Here are the top 10 most represented songwriters during this period. None are southerners. Lê Thương had lived and been active in the South the longest:

1) Phạm Duy
2) Hoàng Trọng
3) Dương Thiệu Tước
4) Y Vân
5) Hoàng Thi Thơ
6) Lê Thương
7) Ngọc Bích
8) Văn Phụng
9) Hùng Lân
10) Thẩm Oánh

All except Hoàng Thi Thơ are northerners.

These are the most represented songwriters year by year:

1949 - Dương Thiệu Tước
1950 - Phạm Duy
1951 - Dương Thiệu Tước
1952 - Hoàng Trọng and Trịnh Văn Ngân
1953 - Châu Kỳ
1954 - Phạm Duy
1955 - Phạm Duy
1956 - Hoài An, Hoàng Thi Thơ and Hoàng Trọng
1957 - Y Vân
1958 - Y Vân
1959 - Hoàng Thi Thơ

Very often the information is minimal - just the title of the song. In most cases, I was able to fill in the file's missing information using my own personal files. In other cases, I was just left with questions.

Here are some of the mystery song titles:

"Ba cảnh đời" (1952)
"Binh bét về làng" (1956)
"Cánh hoa đời" (1952)
"Dạ Lan Hương" (1950) (I would like this to be "Cánh hoa duyên kiếp", but this song was deposited in 1950 and the Đoàn Chuẩn-Từ Linh song was written in 1953)
"Đẹp xưa" (1955)
"Gửi mẹ hiền" (1956)
"Hạnh ngộ" (1959)
"Hò dô ta" (1955) (There are multiple songs to choose from)
"Hò kéo lưới" (1952)
"Hoài niệm" (1956)
"Linh mới tò te" (1955)
"Mơ người lính chiến" (1955)
"Saigon muôn màu" (1959)
"Say mùa thanh bình" (1956)
"Thuyền qua bến vắng" (1952)
"Tình quê" (1950)
"Trăng" (1949)
"Trăng mơ" (1952)
"Trên đường xa" (1952)
"Trên sông hoàng hôn" (1956)
"Trên sông vĩnh biệt" (1959)
"Tuổi thơ" (1952)
"Việt Nam cách mạnh hành khúc"
"Xem mùa chinh chiến" (1956)

Mang hạnh phúc tuyệt vời
Brings wonderful happiness
Khi về đừng quên nhé anh.
When it returns, don't forget, boy.

"Xuân yêu thương" appeared on Paris By Night 4 from 1987, one of the earliest Thúy Nga programs. It was Linda Trang Đài's explosive introduction to the Vietnamese musical public. (She had performed on a few songs on cassettes and sung at Little Saigon clubs prior to this).

The lyrics were created by Lê Đức Cường, the found of the Người Đẹp Bình Dương cassette / CD label. These lyrics have nothing at all to do with French song that it is based on.

Here are the original lyrics and English translation.

"Xuân yêu thương" has become incorporated into the Vietnamese song repertoire, especially during the Tết season. There are dozens of recorded cover versions. Here is a performance by Phương Uyên from the beginning of this year.

"Nhạc nhẹ với quần chúng" (Light Music And The Public) - Phùng Ngọc (1978)

When I doing some business in Da Nang, some young co-eds came to visit and asked me for a "green music" songbook! I asked them what "green music" was, and they replied: "It's light music, we've heard that light music is 'the fashion' now and down South there's a lot of it." I was shocked when they listed the some of the song titles, old Saigon yellow music, and realized that many young people and students now misunderstand this upbeat, rhythmic music to be light music, the "fashion" of today's music. This brings up a reality: many of our young people have not been properly educated about music. Some believe that light music is simply bad music because they think anything for entertainment and relaxation is decadent and bad, or else they can't clearly distinguish between good and bad music, especially when it's instrumental music.

nguồn: Phùng Ngọc, "Nhạc nhẹ với quần chúng," [Light Music With The Public] Văn Hóa Nghệ Thuật (1/1978).

The nhạc vàng, nhạc đỏ, nhạc xanh (yellow music, red music, green music) color scheme is confusing and nonsensical. The idea of yellow music came out of China in 1956. Never clearly defined, it represented all music created outside of the communist system. At that time in Vietnam that meant nhạc cải cách (reformed music) or what is often today called nhạc tiền chiến (pre-war music). "Thiên Thai" by Văn Cao would be nhạc vàng. Nhạc vàng also encompassed traditional genres like hát ả đào and hát chầu văn.

In later practice, nhạc vàng referred to nearly all the music created in the Republic of Vietnam (Việt Nam Cộng Hòa). It especially took on this sense after 1975 when the victorious North sought to eradicate the South's music. Thus the need to invent an additional term nhạc đỏ (red music) to distinguish the legitimate revolutionary music of the victorious regime from the "decadent" and "depraved" music of the South. I've only seen nhạc đỏ appear in print from 1980 onward.

Nhạc xanh (green music) is a stranger concept. I think it came to represent music without linguistic content (instrumental concert music) and songs from Vietnam's socialist European allies and Cuba. It is really unclear how the names nhạc đỏ and nhạc xanh came into existence, although I suspect that these terms were generated by the public itself who were trying to navigated the legalities of music.

Lý do con cái lưu ban (The reason your kids are held back) - Nguyễn Nghiêm (1978)

ôi... cô đơn
...cô đơn ôi...
Oh loneliness...

Lý do con cái lưu ban!
Vì chưng mấy đĩa nhạc vàng mà ra!

The reason your kids are held back!
Is because those yellow music records are out!

"Vàng" in Vietnamese is a positive word. It means both gold / golden and yellow. In the 1950s China applied the terminology "yellow music" to apply to bourgeois music. That would be music expressing anything emotion outside of national pride or hatred of enemies. Vietnam adopted China's usage to police its peoples' musical tastes. The unification of Vietnam in 1975 acquainted most of Vietnam with the love songs of South Vietnam / The Republic of Vietnam. Yes, there were sappy love songs expressing sadness and loneliness. The concept of yellow music diagnoses this as a harmful contagion. Of course, the little boy gets it and admonishes his elder siblings to get it together.

Khi trái tim vẫn hồng (When The Heart Is Still Red) - Nguyễn Duy Khoái (1979)

Khi trái tim đang còn hồng
When the heart is still red
Và nụ cười vẫn còn tươi
And the smile is still fresh
Bạn thân ơi xin đừng để
Oh dear friend don't let
Tuổi xuân qua không tiếng cười
The spring of life pass without laughter
Cùng nhìn sâu trong mắt nhau
Together let's look into each others eyes
Cùng nói với nhau một lần
Together tell each other once:
"Khó khăn này đâu là của
This hardship is not at all
Riêng chúng mình."
Only ours."

Khi trái tim còn mơ mộng
When the heart is still dreaming
Còn giận hờn và chờ mong
Yet angry and expectant
Người yêu ơi xin đừng để
Oh beloved, please don't let
Tình yêu phai theo nỗi sầu
Love fade in melancholy
Còn tình yêu trong con tim
And the love in our hearts
Xin hãy biết yêu cuội đời
Please know the love of life
Tiếng yêu đầu xin ngỏ cùng
This first leave, please express it together with
Đất nước mình
Our country

Khi bước chân chưa lần nghỉ
When our feet still have yet to rest
Mà đường dài đã gọi ta
Yet the long road has called us
Bạn thân ơi xin đừng ngại
Oh dear friend don't worry
Còn đôi chân xin vững lòng
Still pairs of feet please be reassured
Dù đường dài còn gian nan
Though the long road still had hardships
Xin giữ mãi bao nụ cười
Please always hold on to that smile
Đóa hoa hồng trên đường dài
A red blossom on the long road
Đang đón chờ
Awaits us

Tốp ca Đoàn Văn Công Khu V ca bài "Khi trái tim vẫn hồng" của Nguyên Duy Khoái.

Nguyễn Duy Khoái has just passed away on July 6, 2025. He was kind enough to talk with me when I visited Đà Nẵng in 2015. Hà Nội and Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh get all the attention of the musical world, but there are songwriters and cultural groups in all of Vietnam's smaller cities and provinces.

In the early 1970s he was active as a songwriter in the Đà Nẵng student movement protesting for peace and opposing the Republic of Vietnam government. These actions established his post-war credentials. Although he was a big fish in a small pond (he was the Director of the Đà Nẵng Union of Literatuer and Arts Associations - Chủ tịch Liên hiệp các Hội Văn học - Nghệ thuật Đà Nẵng), none of his music has been presented on the Bài Ca Đi Cùng Năm Tháng website.

Many of his songs are what I call "địa phương ca" - locality songs - written to praise the virtues of various districts and villages. "Khi trái tim vẫn hồng" was also the name of the program given at the Nhà Hát Trưng Vương Đà Nẵng shortly before his passing. It refers to a 1979 song written in the style of the student protest songs or du ca (rambling songs) of the pre-1975 Republic of Vietnam.

Instead of protest, this is a song of praise of the nation of Vietnam and an exhortation for young people to serve their nation despite evident hardships. 1979 was a time of hardship and reconstruction - the song may have been intended for people moved to vùng kinh tế mới (new economic zones) or for thanh niên xung phong (literally "assault youth") who moved from the city to the underside to work on infrastructure.

The song appeals to youthful optimism and to one's youth as a time for love. Love was an underdeveloped theme of Vietnamese revolutionary music and love here hints at romantic love, but it primarily a patriotic love. Romanticism lies behind the challenges of a life's work ahead.

trích Censorship in Vietnam của Thomas A. Bass (2017)

The author writes of artists participating in the Nhân Văn Giai Phẩm affair, ca. 1956-1958.
One of these artists was Van Cao, who, in 1945, composed Vietnam’s national anthem. From 1957 to 1986, people were in the peculiar position of being allowed to play but not sing Van Cao’s anthem. Only when the words were changed was the song once again performed. Van Cao himself stopped composing long ago, thereby joining the ranks of Vietnamese artists–hundreds of them, from the 1950s to the present–who have been driven into silence or exile. (page 10)
nguồn: Bass, Thomas A. Censorship in Vietnam: Brave New World (Amherst, MA: University of Massachusetts Press, 2017).

There are many inaccuracies here. Văn Cao's "Tiến quân ca" was written in 1944, not 1945. The lyrics were altered a bit around 1954, but they were never forbidden to be sung. Yes - the government sponsored a contest to find a replacement for Văn Cao's anthem, but they decided to keep it after all. Văn Cao did not stop composing after 1958. In fact, his a few of his new works were even published in the state media as early as 1971.

Censorship in Vietnam has driven creative people into silence or exile, it's true. But a book claiming this should be accurate in its account.

Du kích ca (The Partisan Song) Đỗ Nhuận (1945)

Marcia

Anh em trong đoàn quân du kích cùng nhau vác súng lên nào!
My brothers of the guerrilla squad, together we take up arms
Đi lên! Đi lên! Xuyên qua rừng qua núi
Arise! Arise! Through forests, past mountains
Trong mây mờ đêm tối vượt suối băng ngàn.
In thick clouds, dark of night we ford streams and cross mountain forests.

ĐK
Giặc tiến tới đây, sùng kia cùng nhau cướp lấy!
If the enemy advances here, we'll snatch their guns!
Nhằm cùng nhau bắn mấy viên là mấy quân thù.
Aim together, each cartridge is for an enemy soldier.
Đi lên! Đi lên! Giết quân thù cho hết
Advance! Advance! Kill the enemy till they're gone
Chúng ta kiến quyết giải phóng nước nhà.
We're resolved to liberate the land

Advance with the partisan squad, together we fasten our bayonets
Xung phong! Xung phong! Ngắm quân thù xông tới
Attack! Attack! Aim at the enemy and rush forward
Cướp lương thực khí giới cùng phá đồn
Snatch rations and weapons, destroy their posts.

The partisan squad with the people is like a fish in water
Nhịp đều chân bước tiến theo Tổ quốc anh hùng.
Step in time, advance with the heroic Fatherland
Đi lên! Đi lên! Ta trung thành hăng hái
Advance! Advance! We're faithful and eager.
Dưới quốc kỳ phấp phới màu đỏ sao vàng.
Under the nation's flag, flapping red with a yellow star.

Feeling time flow slowly past
Như mùa thu bao lần thay lá
Like autumn has changed leaves these many times
Nơi màn đêm lang thang cùng trăng
Where night's screen wanders with the moon
Con đường xưa nơi lại thấy
The road long ago where I feel

Mưa. Rơi trong âm thầm.
Rain. Falls in silence
Hàng cây xao xác lá vọng về
Row of bare trees looking back
Từng cơn gió mùa
Seasonal winds

Những đàn chim từ phương xa
Flocks of birds from far off
Bay về đâu giữa đồng vắng?
Where do the fly to in the deserted fields?
Mái lều tranh in hình trên sông
The shed imprinted into the river
Con đò ngang đi tìm hoàng hôn
The ferry vessel crossing, searching for dusk

Thu. Thu qua thật rồi
Autumn. Autumn has truly passed
Mà sao thu vẫn hiện về
But why does it still reappear
Về trong kí ức một thời
Appear in memories of a time

Mong manh
Fragile
Cuốn theo gió
It twists in the wind
Những cánh bay một thời
Flying wings of a time
Những cánh bay lạc đàn
Flying wings lost their flock

Thu qua. Thu lại đến
Autumn passed. The it comes
Những cánh bay gầy guộc
Flying wings, gaunt
Khao khát trong cuộc đời
Hunger in their lives

Canh còng rau đắng (Crab Soup With Bitter Greens) - Ngọc Sơn (ca. 1990-1994)

Đường về thôn tre nghiêng che mái tranh
The road back to the hamlet, a length of bamboo shelters the homes
qua bến sông nghèo ai hát ru buồn
going past the poor river dock, who sings a sad lullaby
lời tình quê đong đưa tiếng võng trưa
words of love for home rock with the creaking of a hammock at noon
lối xưa ta về, tìm bóng quê nhà
I return on the old path, looking for an image of home

Xuồng ba lá nằm cong trên bến sông
A three plank boat sits arched at the river dock
man mác điệu ca dao như tiếng mẹ
an obscure folk lyric sounds like my mother
tiếng mẹ ru bên sông, xuôi nhớ về tuổi thơ
Her lullaby at the river, flows down remembering my youth
qua mấy nhịp cầu tre, thương nhớ lại chung lòng
Past a few bamboo bridges, longing again for a shared heart

Mẹ là ngọn gió quê hương
Mother is the breeze of my homeland
mẹ lưng còng khuôn mặt trầm ngâm
She bore crabs on her back, face lost in thought
bên bếp cá đang kho
At the stove, fish stewing
canh còng rau đắng, đắng như lời mẹ
Crab soup with bitter greens, bitter like her words
một nắng hai sương
For any sunlight, there was twice the dew
mẹ gom trăng, tránh sang gáo quay tròn
She gathered the moon,
chờ con, chờ con
Wait for me, wait for me
Mẹ ơi! Con xót lòng thương mẹ
Oh mother! My heart is broken with love for you
xót lòng tha phương
It was broken because I've gone away
nhớ quê nhớ mẹ, nhớ điệu ca dao
Yearning for home, for mother, for that folk lyric.

What helps our programs to be well received by the market is familiarity. Like a person who goes abroad to eat delicious dishes or who soaks in butter for a long time, upon seeing a bowl of phở, the audience will probably devour it.

Currently, Vietnamese television is being "made foreign". Programs are Westernized, feature films are all Korean and Chinese...

At first, audiences will welcome it enthusiastically, but watching it forever will get boring. All programs produced by Khang Media are researched and conceived by us, creating formats and organizing production... We aim to be "purely Vietnamese" and closely follow the lives of the majority of the mass audience.

Usually, Khang Media's television playing field is aimed at mass audiences. Like Solo With Bolero, for example, we look for ordinary people, capable of singing songs that were once considered "cheesy" but are familiar and intimate for the majority of people.

Thanks to that, even though there are no "stars", the programs are still well received. I think, this is not a big secret, we just set ourselves apart from the crowd.

Spring is coming from those oil wells.
Spring is coming from colorful blossoms.
Mùa xuân đến rạo rực lòng ta.
Spring comes thrilling our hearts.
Mùa xuân đến làm đẹp bài ca.
Spring comes beautify our songs.

Mùa xuân từ những giàn khoan.
Spring from those drills.
Giữa biển khơi nghìn trùng sóng vỗ.
On the high seas, thousands of breaking waves.
Spring from those arms with heart-felt feeling of Vietnam, Soviet Union

Mùa xuân từ những giàn khoan.
Spring from those drills.
Hỏi biển sâu ở đâu mỏ quý.
Ask the deep sea where the precious mines are
Mùa xuân hạnh phúc tình yêu, em hãy cười để mùa xuân thêm xuân.
Happy spring of love, laugh my dear so that spring is more spring-like.
