It's surprising to go through this more-than-a century old newspaper and see a sympathetic view of a colonized people by the writers and artists of the colonizer. The image was resonant today because many roads near the National Library were flooded and impassable and I could have used a lift of some sort to cross the rushing ankle deep water. I would never dream of thinking that anyone would lift me up and convey me to dry land (as someone who is otherwise able bodied and only bothered by getting wet). But the ridiculously prim French people in the cartoon accept this form of conveyance and must have found it necessary in the proper order of things.
