"Si vous étiez le nègre"... - Interim (1931)

"If you were the negro" ...

The Colonial Exhibition could be a great blessing if it gave the mass of its visitors a slightly larger idea of Humanity.

The crowd rushes to the Exhibition and looks with curiosity at the Yellow, Red or Black [races], and also the Arabs of North Africa, who are more white than yellow. Curiosity is sometimes, it seems to me, too lively, too indiscreet, And I call myself this sentence which said in my youth of my school days: "Sir, he looks at you like if we were curious animals."

Our tact, our courtesy -- here is a great opportunity to exercise them by proving to the men and women of these distant races that we do not consider them as "curious beasts," around whom we press ourselves like a cage for monkeys, but just like men and women, that is to say, as people quite like us.

Their civilization is not the same as ours, of course. However, it is not always inferior, and we have ended up learning it. Mothers do not take their children to the Colonial Exhibition, saying, "Come on, let's go see the savages."

Black people? Do not we have to admire the beauty of their athletic bodies? And their sculpture, do not believe that it is only because of snobbery that many artists admire it. ...

For the Yellows, it's pointless to ask, is it? Do not we feel humiliated when we are told that somewhere in China, a sailor from the West has jostled a "Yellow" coming out of Cambridge University, or from Paris University. Eastern thought is pure and strong enough to frighten the guardians of our tradition.

I saw at the Colonial Exhibition an Annamite actress who is not surpassed, artistically, by any of our actresses. As she was crying, on the stage, real tears, I thought: A good man from home, meeting this woman in front of the carved friezes of Angkor, will not he consider her as a simple "native"; And is she not she going to be hurt by this look, suffer from it? If we were in her place ...

Yet, none of us are unaware that we are coming to a point in history when the only colonial policy possible is that of justice, understanding, collaboration, and friendship.

The Colonizers and colonized will soon no longer be able to think as conquerors and vanquished. They will be "big brothers" and "little brothers", or they will be enemies. ...
