Fingered vibrato stirs the dewy night,

Submerging the moon on the water into dim separation,
Khiến trong gió ngưng đọng niềm thống thiết
Stifling the breeze in feelings of woe
Của bao nhiêu người đẹp khát tình duyên
Of so many beauties who thirst for true love
Ôm nhớ nhung còn nức nở bên đèn.
Embracing longing, still sobbing by the lamp.
Đêm khuya vắng thêm gợi thời xa vắng,
Midnight desolate evokes more of that long ago time,
Tiếng bi ai như vẽ hình cay đắng
The mournful sound is like the sketching of a painful portrait
Của chia phôi, cùng thương tiếc đợi chờ
Of parting, along with regrets and waiting
Trong bao thiên tình sử não nùng xưa.
Of a plaintive love story from days long past.
Thấy chăng ai? trên sông khuya im sóng
Do you see someone? Upon the still midnight river
Bâng khuâng trôi một con thuyền mơ mộng,
Sadly floats a dreamy boat,
Thuyền lênh đênh gieo giữa cõi sương tan
Boats drift, scattering midst the dispersing fog
Tiếng ngậm ngùi muôn thủa của thời gian.

Biết chăng ai? bao nhiêu điều cực khổ
Are you aware of someone? How many misfortunes
Với bao nỗi hờn oan trong vũ trụ
With so many grudges in this universe
Cùng hẹn hò thu lại một đêm nay,
Have kept their appointment to gather into this night,
Đương nỉ non thánh thót ở trên giây,
And are whispering sweetly upon the strings,
Theo ngón đê mê của bàn tay nghệ sĩ.
Through the inspired fingering of the artist's hands.
Thuốc độc êm đềm, ôi! giọng đàn kiều-mị,
Oh tranquil poison! The lute's honeyed tones,
Bởi vì đâu gieo xuống mãi lòng ta

The yueqin is commonly played in Vietnamese traditional music. In this instance, the poet describes enjoying ca Huế on the Perfume River in Huế. The woman singer and the đàn nguyệt on the slowly flowing river create an atmosphere of mystery and delight.
