Ngỏ hồn qua đêm (Baring My Soul Through The Night) - Triết Giang [Hoàng Trang] & Hàn Châu (1966)

BOLÉRO

Chiều bàn giao cho vùng đêm đen biên giới.
Evening, relief came at the border's black night.
Theo cánh quân anh đóng ven lưng chừng đồi.
Along the flank, I'm stationed hillside, halfway up
Nghe muôn côn trùng than trong đêm trường sầu thương thế nhân
Hearing an untold number of insects moan through the long night sorrowing for mankind.
Hồn rung tiềm thức quay trong vùng thương nhớ, len lén đưa anh qua bến mộng ngày xưa.
My soul, stirred unconsciously, turns back to memory's realm that seeps in, guides me past the dream docks of long ago.

Chuyện ngày xưa chia đều ra hai phe đánh.
Events long ago equally divided two fighting factions.
Anh lấy cây làm súng bên em diệt thù.
I took up a stick as a gun alongside you to eliminate the enemy,
Phe kia ngang tàng xua quân đốt nhà đuổi hai đứa ta
The other side arrogantly driving away soldiers, burning houses down, chasing away the two of us
Trò chơi tuổi xanh đôi bên cùng nhau đánh tương sát lẫn nhau như oán thù nghìn thu.
Children's games, two sides solemnly striking each other as if there was hatred and resentment for millennia

Month continues after month, youth has gone and I bade farewell to that game...
Đêm tiễn đưa anh, quay gót son mềm em đếm dài cây số thương
The evening you saw me off, your soft pink heals, calculating the long kilometers, feeling
Gói ghém quá khứ trong chiếc ba lô nơi tuyến đầu nằm thao thức
Packing up the past in a backpack at the front, laying awake
Giây phút suy tư, xanh giấc mơ gầy nghe trái sầu rụng nửa đêm.
Moments of reflection, hopeful slender dreams, I hear the sad fruit fall in the middle of the night.

Nhìn hỏa châu lưng trời soi chia đêm tối
Looking the flares off in the sky, dividing the night's darkness
Anh ngỡ như ngày cưới hoa đăng ngập trời.
I imagine it was like our wedding, floral lanterns flooding the sky
Xin em tin rằng đôi ta bây giờ dù xa cách nhau tình yêu ngàn năm không phai nhạt hương sắc
Please dear, believe that the two of us, although now far apart, fragrance of our thousand year love will not fade
I promise to love you all of this life.

Hoàng Trang was one of my favorite people in the Vietnamese music world. He was gracious, thoughtful and helpful in every way. He co-wrote this song a short time after he was wed. I know that he spent intervals of time during the 1960s among military units so he should have had a solid understanding of the psychology of the Republic of Vietnam soldier.

He describes the soldier's setting well -- a long night watch enveloped in an atmosphere of flares and an insect chorus. The thud of a falling piece of fruit breaks up the monotony. War songs are often about action, but it seems that the greater reality of soldier's life is that they spend a lot of their time waiting in remote locations with only sporadic sometimes terrifying action. Waiting leads to thinking, to an imaginary conversation with a soulmate, someone who would understand and comfort you.

Much of that thinking is nostalgia. Bến mộng / dream docks refer to the passage of his wife to his family, to their conjugal union. Bright explosions in the night recall the fireworks at their wedding. He firmly recalls the moment the parted and he entered his service. Midst the alternating worry and waiting of a foot soldier, he holds on tightly to his love for her, to their enduring mutual love.

The song poses a true riddle. Why do people of one nation fighting one another with the fervency and abandon of children's war games? The answer given is that they and their way of life have been attacked. The narrator can give no deeper understanding of the issues, but defense is a legitimate reason to take up arms. He is defending her and the future life they want to lead. The night insects appear less than satisfied with this outlook as they moan in sorrow for mankind.

Không giờ rồi (It's Zero Hour) - Vinh Sử (1971)

ngâm:
Em yeu ơi!
Gì hở Anh?
Ai giầu ba họ,
Ai khó ba đời,
Em đừng than thở
Thêm khổ mà thôi!

recited:
My dear!
What, dear?
Who is rich for three generations
Who us miserable for three lifetimes
Dear, don't sigh
It only makes it worse!

habanera

Không giờ rồi, Em ngủ đi thôi!
It's zero hour, just get some sleep!
Hơi đâu mà lo lắng Em ơi!
No use in worrying, Dear!
Thà nghèo mà biết mến thương nhau, còn hơn giầu có đổi thay mau,
To be poor and able to love and care for each other, is better than being rich and quickly changing
Chẳng lẽ nghèo hoài hay sao?
Perhaps being always poor is better?

Không giờ rồi, Em biết chưa Em
It's zero hour, do You know it yet, dear
Sao Em còn thao thức trong đêm?
Why dear are You sleepless at night?
We're very hard up and we're used to it, later on if we're rich we'll love each other more,
Thôi, Em đừng buồn nhé em!
Alright, don't be sad my dear!

Em ơi! Em suy nghĩ chi từng giờ, cho Anh gối chăn hững hờ, gần nhau nhưng bơ vơ tội lắm!
Dear! What do you think of every hour, giving Me indifferent blankets and pillows, if we're together and feel abandoned it's a terrible shame!
Em ơi! rằng "Trời sinh voi sinh cỏ," đâu ai đói mà Em lo.
Dear! It's sad "God made elephants and made grass," nobody's going hungry and You worry so.
Em thao thức hoài thêm ốm o.
Keeping your self awake you'll waste away.

Không giờ rồi, ta ngủ cho say.
It's zero hour, let's get a good sleep.
Mai đây còn lo kế sanh nhai.
Tomorrow there's we've plenty to worry figuring out how to make a living
Bọn mình giờ rét trắng đôi tay, vẫn tin hạnh phúc ở tương lai, không bao giờ tình nhạt phai!
For the likes of us, we feel the coldness of two empty hands, we still seek happiness in our future, never will our love fade!

Many of Vinh Sử's songs have a biographical element. He wrote this song after deserting his military service, returning to the poor District 4 neighborhood he grew up in. He describes how his wife assisted him in hiding from the military police.
It was a time of military service. Back then, I was evading military service and often had to stay awake until midnight because they would frequently come to houses to investigate during that time period. My wife built a large cupboard so that when they came to check, I had a place to hide. At that time, I lived with a very industrious wife. Every day she would stay awake until midnight so that if anyone came to ask something, she let me slip away and stood there and politely chat. Whenever they were gone, I lay there thinking and felt sorry for my wife. All day she did hard, tiring work, and then had to keep watch for her husband evading military service. I thought about that and wrote the song "It's Zero Hour, get some sleep, dear.
This was a tense time for them both. It's not clear what her work was, but she was probably a small trader. He was trying to achive success as a songwriter. They were living in one of Saigon's slums, which may have helped him avoid the authorities. It's very romantic for a man to write a song expressing appreciation for a woman's work and worries. He incorporates a couple of folk sayings into the lyrics. The recited introduction references:

Không ai giầu ba họ,
Không ai khó ba đời.

"No family is rich for three generations; none is miserable for three lifetimes." One online dictionary translates this as "every dog has its day." I think that that is the basic idea - no bloodline, no family, no individual is fated to a guarantee of affluence or poverty. There is reason to hope for something better.

The second folk saying "Trời sinh voi sinh cỏ" translates as "God/Heaven made elephants and made grass" or more simply "Heaven will provide." It's used to comfort people worried about future hardship. Somehow everything will work out.

In Vietnamese, personal pronouns are usually gendered. The published lyrics allow for the interchange of "Anh" (elder brother, somewhat older male friend, boyfriend, husband) with "Em" (younger sister, somewhat young woman friend, or close to you in age, girlfriend, wife). I used the pronouns that Vinh Sử would use, but the song has frequently been sung by women.

The song's meaning has the character of a lullaby. The word "ru" / "lullaby" conventionally applies to a mother / father / family member / caregiving singing a baby to sleep. It has also been applied to love songs that comfort the beloved, most notably by Trịnh Công Sơn. "Không giờ rồi" shares no stylistic similarity to that repertoire. It nevertheless expresses concern and comfort towards the beloved one.

More recently there are a number of "bolero" videos in the style of this one sung by Mộc Anh, who is much, much younger than the song itself. The video tries to simulate the teahouse (phòng trà) atmosphere of 1960s/1970s Sài Gòn.

There's nothing wrong about doing that. Viewers may even appreciate this nostalgia, but this setting gets everything wrong.

It's almost trivial to note this, but there is no attempt to match the onscreen performance with the gestures of the musicians. When the guitar plays, the fingered guitar gets a close up that has no correspondence to what is being played. The saxophone gets a close up with the synthesized sound of a saxophone. The piano and string section of four young women do not contribute to the sound of the song at all. There would almost never have been women playing instruments in Sài Gòn teahouses (although it's now a trope on Paris by Night stages).

The most significant discrepancy would be the performance of this song at all in a pre-1975 Saigon teahouse. Teahouses were an upscale entertainment. "Không giờ rồi" and the lower class musical genre it represents would never have been tolerated in this setting. The lyrics are too unrefined, the melody too similar to traditional music and cải lương theater to have been anything but ridiculed by the teahouse audience of that time.

These videos does do show a clear change in attitude about this music where it is given a present dignity that was denied to it in the past. With the poor attempt at verisimilitude, I feel that that dignity is not fully realized.

The following comedic video / skit by Hòa Minzy and Hoài Lâm captures the song's tone and setting better. The song has always found its audience among the urban poor of the city's back alleys.

Khi không (Out of Nowhere) - Cô Phượng [Vinh Sử] (1971)

ngâm:
Khi không Anh ngoãnh mặt làm ngơ
Out of nowhere You turn your face away and ignore me
Em lỗi lầm chi để hững hờ?
What was my mistake to make you indifferent?
Hay đóa trà mi đã mỡ ngõ
Or the camellia blossoms
Con ong đã rõ lối tôn thờ.
The bee has cleared the way to venerate.

ballade

Out of nowhere you turn your face way and ignore me
Em tội tình chi Anh bổng hững hờ.
What way am I at fault? You're suddenly indifferent.
Điều gì lầm lỗi Anh ơi, bọn mình nhỏ to đôi lời, hơn giận hờn mất lòng nhau thôi!!!
What is my mistake, dear, we said a few words out of turn,  in anger we only hurt each other's feelings!

Out of nowhere you've found a reason for us to part.
Or You've find somebody else who's rich.
Nghe lời... Em mới đem trao, kỷ niệm khó quên đêm nào, thương nhau rồi Anh đành phụ sao?
Hear me, the words I want to share, the unforgettable memories of those nights, loving each other, how could You betray this?

Trời ơi, thôi rồi. một đóa trà mi, con ong đã rỏ đường đi, con ong đã rỏ lối về.
My God, that's enough, a camellia blossoms, a bee clears the road there, the bee clears the path back
My God, loving someone, someone who could bring himself to change, loving someone who sends bitterness, loving someone so careless!

Out of the blue You've lied, why?
Tin lầm Anh qua lời nói ngọt ngào.
I've mistakenly believed you and your sweet words.
Now love has flown high, once flooded with torment, I beg that there isn't another time!

"Trời ơi" có nghĩa "tiếng kêu biểu lộ sự ngạc nhiên hay đển than thở." Than thở cho ai?

"Tình nghèo có nhau" (Poor In Love We Have Each Other) - Đài Phương Trang (1972)

I'm not looking for an ideal lover at all, dear
I'm not looking for a perfect lover at all, dear
I'm not looking for a lover with great beauty
A lover who's pompous, refined, of flowered brocade and gold.

I'm not looking for a lover who turns white to black
I'm not looking for a lover who gets carried away with extravagance
I'm not looking for a prestigious, precious lover
Lầu cao xe các em ơi có gì vẫn luôn vững bền.
Mansions, limousines, dear, anything must still be stable.

Em ơi anh tìm người yêu chung thủy
Dear, I'm looking for a faithful lover
Anh tìm người yêu trong mơ
I'm looking for my dream lover
Dẫu nghèo nguyện không đổi lòng
Though poor, I was I'll never be untrue to my heart
Em ơi biết rằng ở đời
Dear, you know that in this world
Ai không muốn đẹp giàu càng cao sang
Anyone wants want to be beautiful, rich and refined?
Vì anh nghèo đâu dám mơ.
Because I'm poor, I don't dare dream.

Dear, I'm looking for a lover without lofty dreams
Em ơi anh tìm người yêu thương mái tranh xiêu
Dear, I'm looking for a lover who cherishes a ramshackle thatched hut
Mai đây cho dù rằng đời gốc bể chân trời
Tomorrow, even if sent to the ocean's edge at the horizon
Cuộc đời bão táp phong ba, suốt đời có nhau bên mình.
In a life of storms, through it all we'll be together.

"Tình nghèo có nhau" by Đài Phương Trang is the fourth song about poor people's love on the Premier 3 tape. In Đài Phương Trang's "Tình đời tay trắng," the parents of the love object went to marry off their daughter into better economic circumstances while the narrator asks for Heaven's assistance for those like him who are poor and unsuccessful in love. Vinh Sử's "Nhẵn cỏ cho em" presents a sincere, naive narrator who hoped that his shared circumnstances with his love object would prevail over material temptation. "Hai bàn tay trắng," also by Vinh Sử, presents a narrator who fully appreciates the futility of his station in life in realizing a future life with his love interest.

Recorded by the duo of Chế Linh and Thanh Tâm, "Tình nghèo có nhau" presents an entirely different outlook. We may not be rich or good looking, but we'll have each other. In fact, we scorn the materialism of others. However, in order to that, they dare not dream of too much. They'll just weather the storm together. As far as I can tell, this song was never published as sheet music.

"Tình nghèo có nhau" was revived by Mạnh Quỳnh on the Paris By Night 75 program: "Về miền viễn đông" (Return to the Far East") - in 2004.

Đêm hỏa châu (Flares At Night) - Vinh Sử + Nguyên Thảo (1970)

boléro

Đèn hỏa châu thắp đỏ từng đêm biên giới xa xôi.
Flares, a lantern lit red every night at the distant border
Nhìn đèn gian nan đi hoang tìm kỷ niệm hôm nao mình ly biệt
Look toward lantern of hardship, astray searching for memories of separation's day
Anh dặn dò rằng mai mốt Anh về.
I advised you that one day I'll be back.

Rồi chờ Anh bóng lẻ đèn châu hiu hắt bên sông.
Then wait for me, a sole shadow of the weakening flare light by the river
Mầu đèn yêu thương hôn trên vùng đất Mẹ đưa anh tìm quân giặc
The beloved lamp's color kisses the Motherland lead me to find the enemy invader
Anh miệt mài làm lịch sử Quê Hương
Dedicated to making history for the Homeland.

Ôi! đêm lo âu, ngọn đèn châu khắc khoải canh sầu
Oh, anxious nights, the flare lantern during the uneasy watch
Đèn lây lắt ngọn bồi hồi vọng về phương chiến kinh cầu.
Dull lantern uneasily echoes back to toward the battle praying.
Ôi! đêm chông gai vạn người trai đốt lửa tương lai
Oh, night of spikes and thorns, many thousands of men light the future's flame
Hăng say giết giặc nguyện thề làm tròn tuổi ngọc hôm nay.
Enthusiastically killing the invaders, vowing to fulfill their youthful purity today.

Giờ tiền phương bước chuyện đường quân in dấu chân "Saut"
Now the frontline steps, the story of army's path pressed with footprint "Jump"
Mình dù xa nhau anh đi vì chiến cuộc đêm đêm đèn châu đỏ
Though we're far apart, I left because of the war, night after night the red flare lantern
Anh nhìn mà lòng thương nhớ vơi đầy.
I look and my heart's longing ebbs and floes.

From the homefront complete a song for nation for me
Tình mình đêm nay mang trang hoàng thế hệ như châu đèn hoa mộng
Our love tonight ornaments our generation like dreamy flare lanterns
Em một lòng chờ đợi "Lính" biên cương.
You with all your heart await the "Soldiers" at the border.

Vinh Sử only had two songs released on disc - "Bạc màu áo trận" (The Battleshirt's Faded Colors) and this one, "Đêm hỏa châu." Co-written with and published by Nguyên Thảo, they are also the only soldier songs that Vinh Sử composed. (Vinh Sử insisted with me that he was the sole songwriter for both songs).

An interesting touch omitted from more recent performances of this song is the word "saut" - French for "jump," probably used by parachutists. In other words the parachutists led the unit into this border area. His soldier is fighting for his "Motherland / Homeland" with a youthful desire to make history.

Both of Vinh Sử's soldier songs received television airplay in 1970 on the Tiếng Nói Động Viên (The Voice of Mobilization) and the Tiếng Nói Tổng Quản Trị programs (The Voice of General Administration).

"Bạc màu áo trận" (The Battleshirt's Faded Colors) - Vinh Sử + Nguyên Thảo (1970)

Since the time we've been far apart I've entered the army's hardships
Địa đầu biên khu săn quân thù đời áo hoa rừng.
At borderlands tracking down the enemy, life in a shirt of jungle flowers.
Từng đêm hỏa châu tung trời cao
Nightly, flares hurl high above
Điệu buồn đại liên rơi ngàn sau.
The music of machine guns drops into the forests behind
Suddenly I feel confused missing that little capital city girl.

Beyond my love of Homeland, I offer this heart to you.
Ngày tàn theo năm xa phố phường bãi gió trăng ghềnh.
Days fade through the year far from city streets in the windy fields, on moonlit cliffs
Dù cho thời gian đi dài lâu
Though the time lasts long
Đừng buồn nghe em cho mình vui
Don't be sad dear, let me be happy
Chờ anh về phép anh đền đêm đối diện thần tiên.
Wait for my leave, I'll make it up at night opposite my saint.

Em ơi, đau thương từng đêm khắc khoải vì chinh chiến mãi chưa tàn bao tuổi thơ vắng đi tiếng cười.
Dear, nightly restless pain because of endless war not yet faded, so much youth missing laughter.
Em ơi xin dâng đời trai giết giặc
Dear, let me offer the life of a man killing invaders
Nguyện cho đất Mẹ yên vui, trong giấc ngủ an lành.
Pledge for a peaceful, happy Motherland, in a slumber of recovery

Tiền đồn xa xăm yêu thương đầy vai trận nghiêng nghiêng.
The distant beloved outpost full of battle shoulders bent down
Bạc màu chinh y anh chưa về vì lính quen rừng.
Fading my uniform that hasn't returned because soldiers know the jungle.
Giờ đây hậu phương em triền miên.
These days behind the lines you continuously
Nguyện cầu cho anh đi bình yên
Pray for me to go peacefully
Ngày anh tròn lính anh về
The day I finishing soldiering and I return
Xuân thế kỷ hàn huyên.
The spring of a century of conversation.

This song is written from the point of view of a bad-ass soldier of the Republic of Vietnam. The uniform's color have faded owing to long exposure to the elements on the battlefield. He addresses a lover back "behind the lines" (hậu phương). The words don't address her feelings but instead emphasize his steadfastness that it is as strong as his will to fight.

Vinh Sử didn't usually address the soldiers of the Republic of Vietnam. Republic of Vietnam songs do not usually address an enemy (quân thù) or invaders (giặc).
Chế Linh recorded "Bạc màu áo trận" in 1970 for the Dư Âm label.  Chế Linh was largely responsible popularizing Vinh Sử's songs.

Huyền thoại chiều mưa (Legend of a Rainy Afternoon) - Nguyễn Vũ (1967)

boléro

1:
A rainy weekend afternoon, sprinkling rain and white clouds gathering.
Em đến thăm anh về vì mưa mãi nên không kịp về.
You came to visit me, because of incessant rain and there was no way go back home on time.
Bên em anh lặng nhìn màu trời nhòa đáy mắt mộng mơ.
By your side, I quietly regarded the pale sky in the depths of your dreamy eyes.
Sợ người yêu khóc khe khẽ bên tai, anh kể chuyện ngày xưa
Fearing my lover might softly cry in my ear, I told a story from long ago.

Chuyện xưa kể rằng: Trên tiên giới ấy ngày vui kết hoa đăng.
According to the old story: Above in that fairyland, happy days with flowered lanterns
Thiên Quốc đang vui, một nàng tiên lỡ làm rơi ly ngọc ngà.
The Heavenly Kingdom was happy, a fairy accidently dropped a jade goblet

Ðang say nên Trời bèn đọa đày nàng tiên xuống trần gian.
She was drunk, the Heavens banished the fairy to this mortal world.
As a person in this world, she did not know when she could return to heaven.

My dear! The fairy came to the mortal word during an afternoon of whisking clouds.
And pitying the soldier's life, the exposed to the elements so that even when one day
Even when the angel directed the clouds to grow rosy to make a carriage for the fairy to return.
The fairy lied: "I'm angry with heaven and I'm not going back!"

The fairy who came down from heaven without her white wings watched the falling cloud, by his side she whispered for it keep raining so that she'll not have to go back.
Em ơi! Lỡ mà trời gọi về thì tiên nữ về không?
My dear! If the heavens call you back will you go?
Smiling she said: "This fairy likes the mortal world with rainy afternoons very much."

I met Nguyễn Vũ in 1995. Unfortunately, that was at the beginning of my research and I did know what questions to ask and gained very little information. I nevertheless, always create a small tribute to all the songwriters who have spoken to me.

Nguyễn Vũ passed away nearly a week ago on September 24, 2025.

This song was written following the bolero rhythm, the most representative rhythm during the Republic of Vietnam era. Hoàng Oanh first recorded it in 1967 on a 7 inch record for the Sơn Ca label. The song can also be classified as "nhạc lính" or soldier music since it does concern a soldier. He must have gotten leave to return to visit his sweetheart. Their time together would have come to end except rainfull detained her return home. While she is contemplating their renewed separation, he lightens the mood by casting her as a fairy who was punished and came to earth. Loving him and supporting his hard life as a soldier she opted to stay in the human realm.

The war almost seems absent from the song, overtaken by interest in the "legend" he spun. Perhaps this is why this is one of the rare soldier songs from the Republic of Vietnam to pass censorship and given permission for performance on September 24, 2015, a little over 10 years ago, and 40 years after the unification of Vietnam. Here is a second duet performance with Thanh Lan and Anh Khoa. Here a backbeat is added to the bolero tempo.

Tôi tiễn người... tôi đưa tôi (I Saw Someone Off... I Send Myself) - Trương Hoàng Xuân (1968)

Khi anh đi rồi tôi nhìn gác vắng buồn hiu.
Once you left I look upstairs, sadly empty.
Lúc Quê hương thúc gọi đem nhọc nhằn giã ơn đời.
When the Homeland urges, its call brings hardship to thank life.
Dấu vết chung kỷ niệm còn thắm thiết đêm buồn vui.
Traces of memories deeply shared those nights, happy and sad.
Tuổi vàng son chúng mình tựa bèo mây trên đầu núi
At our resplendent age, it's just clouds hovering like duckweed around mountain tops

We were born into a topsy turvy time of trouble.
Chiến chinh gieo oán hận lên từng vùng đất yên lành.
War has cast hatred upon every region of our peaceful land.
Đứa bé thương tuổi ngọc ngà có lúc quên niềm vui.
Dear little ones, jade-like youth at times forget their happiness.
Growing up during frightful nights, from towns to the fields

Anh đừng buồn dẫu đời cây đắng đã phân ly bao cuộc tình.
Brother, feel no sadness, though bitter life has divided so many loving relationships.
Anh đừng trách cuộc đời đâu dễ chia lìa tình hai đứa mình...
Brother, lay no blame at life that so easily separates the two of us...

Anh đi bây giờ qua ngày mãi đến lượt tôi.
Now you are leaving, tomorrow it will be my turn.
The next morning, the cold and emptiness of this house I'll give back to you.
Tiếp nối đêm sách đèn là bóng tối đêm hành quân.
To continue the nights of books at lamplight will be dark nights of maneuvers.
With the faith of those duckweed clouds above the sky's vast sea.

Trang Mỹ Dung ca bài "Tôi tiễn người... tôi đưa tôi."

I have just learned of the passing of the musicians Trương Hoàng Xuân on May 3, 2025. He was one of the many songwriters who have generously agreed to meet with me and answer my questions. I always feel that I must honor those who have helped me.

A Saigon native, he grew up in a family of evangelicals and studied at the Lycée Pétrus Ký. He studied music with several well-known teachers -- Hùng Lân, Lê Thương, Tống Ngọc Hạp and Võ Đức Tuyết. In 1966 he enlisted in the armed forces of the Republic of Vietnam with the rank of sergeant, working for the Armed Forces radio station (Đài Phát Thanh Quân Đội).

Like many professional musicians of that time and place he had a parallel career as a freelance musician, teaching, playing at clubs, writing arrangements, and, of course, writing songs. He also used the pen names Hoàng Ngọc Quyên and Thy Linh.

He left radio (and the armed services) and started a career as a teacher at the Trường Trung Học Tổng Hợp Nguyễn An Ninh in the 10th district of Saigon. Some time after the events of 1975, his suspect resumé (lý lịch) caused him to have to quit teaching. He then worked for the postal service doing cultural work.

This was not one of the most popular songs of its time, but it was recorded by Trang Mỹ Dung for Sơn Ca records. (Trang Mỹ Dung is one of my favorite song interpreters). In a time and place with many, many sad songs, this is one of the sadder ones. On completing school, for a young man there's only war. A friend sees off a friend knowing that his turn is coming up soon. They will transition from sitting at a desk studying books by lamplight to night time military maneuvers.

Unlike other generations, these two were born in a "topsy turvy time of trouble" (mùa nghiêng ngửa loạn ly). I translate "mùa" was time, but it more precisely means season, and seasons imply cyclical events. "Ly loạn" means disorder, especially social disorder which in this context is warfare. "War has cast hatred upon every region of our peaceful land." No greater political context is given for this disorder. One would hope that peace would be the default within a nation, yet young people are fated to try to quell this disorder.

These students sent to war are terribly aware of their insignificance within the larger context - they are "clouds hovering like duckweed around mountain tops." Duckweed clusters on a pond's surface, as clouds cluster around mountain peaks. Both images speak to impermanence and to the self-awareness of  insignificance felt by both protagonists the song.

There is little hope in this song. Nor is little inspiration to try to fight hard to prevail. There is also not rancor toward anyone -- toward an enemy, toward the government, toward fate, toward the forces that have taken control of their lives. But the song speaks to the reality of young men in that society stepping up to take their place (as duckweed or cloud vapor) in the effort to restore peace to their land.

Người xa về thành phố (Someone Afar Comes Back To Town) - Trúc Phương (1969)

I'm back in the city, places to eat, entertainment with strangers.
Cho bỏ gian lao ngần này phép rong chơi, rủ phong sương đầy áo mà lòng nghe ước muốn lên cao.
To throw off all the rigors, on leave wandering, inviting wind and dew on my shirt, but my heart feels like it wants to rise above
Đi lính xa đánh giặc từng giờ viết trăm lá thư để hẹn hò, cho buổi hôm nay đời chỉ có ta thôi, tiếng yêu chưa lần nói mà đường yêu chân bước vào rồi!
Being a faraway soldier fighting the enemy every hour, writing a hundred letters to vow, so that today life just has us alone, the word love unsaid but love's road has already been trod upon!

Disheveled dewy hair parted given to us, for us awaiting this night waiting so many nights since the war in every region, I dream for everything to be alright on your lips and eyes.

I return to my unit, accustomed to the journey, promising one day to return.
Nhưng kẻ phương xa đời còn thú vui xa, những đêm ngang tầm súng vào nửa khuya nhung nhớ ngập lòng.
But for those far away, life still has distant pleasures, nights with level with guns in the middle of the night, longing floods my heart.

Mùa đông của anh (My Winter) - Trần Thiện Thanh (1970)

Ngày nào anh yêu em?
When did I love you?
You have forgotten it within the wonderful pain.
Ngày nào em yêu anh?
When did you love me?
Em hãy quên với trời hạnh phúc mới.
You often forgot it with new happier skies
Em ơi đông lại về từ trăm năm lạnh giá, tim anh như ngừng thở từ sau ân tình đó
My dear, winter came back from a hundred frozen years, my heart seemed to cease breathing after that benevolance
Em nghe không? Mùa đông! Mùa đông!
Did you feel it? Winter! Winter!

Ngày nào ta xa nhau?
What day did we become far apart?
Anh bước sâu trong vũng tối nhạt nhòa.
I've stepped deeply into a dim darkness.
Từng mùa đông theo qua.
Each winter follows past.
I've forgotten life's snowy peaks.
Xưa, hôn em một lần rồi đau thương tràn lấp
Long ago, I kissed you once then came a permeating pain
I loved you for a day and am far from you in this life, you love winter so I love winter, oh, my Winter.

I'm just a madman in love's garden
I'm just a drunkard along the road I see
"Anh đi đi, người điên không biết nhớ và người say không biết buồn"
"Move along, a madman cannot remember and drunkard cannot know sadness."

Loves of this world across a many thousand lives are meaningless
But people still seek each other in intentional embraces
Như đôi ta niềm yêu xưa chỉ còn một vì sao em lẻ loi
Just like we two, love was only a solitary star

Trời lập đông chưa em? cho lũ dơi đi tìm giấc ngủ vùi.
Has heaven set up winter yet? so colonies of bats buried in slumber
Spite me wandering sickly cold, inwardly imagining that my lover is coming
Đêm chia ly anh về đường khuya em bật khóc anh xa em thật rồi
On the night of separation, I came home on the midnight road, you burst into tears, I'm truly far from you
Làm sao quên mùi tóc?
How can I forget your hair's fragrance?
Em hỡi em
Oh, my dear
"Có phải tình băng giá là tình đẹp trên thế gian?"
"Could it be that frost is the beautiful love of this world?"

Đường trần lá đổ (Life's Road, Falling Leaves) - Duy Khánh (1975?)

Nghe em đi rồi, anh trở về đơn côi.
Hearing that you've gone, I return alone
Nhạc sầu chia phôi đưa anh vào cuối nẽo đời.
Separation's melancholy music leads me to the end of life's path
Sad, oh so sad hearing the rain cast down upon someone's eyes.
Đường em, em đi xa vời.
Your road, you've gone quite far
Highlands, into the clouds, following the gusts my love.
Ai hiểu cho tôi.
Who understands this for me.

Em ra đi vì theo cuộc tình kiêu sa
You left because you followed a fabulous love
Đường dài phong ba anh quay về giết mộng an hoà
On a long tempestuous road, I return to kill my dreams for peace
The old moon's happiness is for when a pair of hearts feel apart
Rồi đây, đam mê chôn vùi,
Then now, the passion is buried,
Hoang vu quên đời ôi khắc khoải
Desolate, forgetting life, oh the torment
Nhớ người tình ơi.
Missing you lover.
Ai hiểu cho tôi.
Who understands this for me.

Em ơi, em ơi.
Dear, my dear
Trời khuya lá đổ đường trần ai đau khổ,
It's midnight leave pour down on life's road, who is in pain?
Đường trần ai dang dỡ, đường trần ai nức nở, khóc cho mình hơn cả tình nhân.
On life's road who has been interrupted, who is sobbing, crying for themselves more than their lover
Em ơi, em ơi xin nhớ trong đời vẫn có một người,
Dear, my dear, please remember that in life there was one person,
Who loved you always, doesn't speak of it, only ask to write a song to give you.

Đêm nay mưa về, xin đừng về cao nguyên
Tonight the rain's back, please don't return to the highlands
Để hồn giai nhân say giấc nồng bên cạnh tình quân
So that a beautiful woman's soul slumbers warmly next to a soldier love
Someone loved another, please don't block and separate the pair
Còn tôi, tôi cúi xin đời
Yet I, I bow down and ask life
Allow me to forget someone in my dreams, that's all.
Chỉ thế mà thôi.
Only that, that's all.

Duy Khánh ca "Đường trần lá đổ."

"Ăn năn" (Regrets) - Hoàng Trang (1970)

Ngày mình yêu nhau hai đứa ước mơ trầu cau
The day we fell in love, we two made a wish for betel and areca
Em đâu có ngờ rằng hai đứa xa nhau.
I couldn't have known that we would be far apart
Giờ buồn không anh biết mộng xưa chẳng thành, em tin không phải mình mà vì đời chia rẻ.
Now sad, dear, knowing that our dreams of long ago won't be realized, I believe it's not our fault that life separated us

Chiều buồn trên mi hai đứa giữa cơn hè đi.
Sad evening on our lashes, in the summer we both leave
Yêu thương kéo dài, ngày hai đứa chia tay.
Love stretched along, now we two must part.
Once at each other's side it made us love all our loves, this passion is the sad trace of regrets

Sóng gió cuốn tới lúc tình yêu mất rồi
Wind and waves sweep toward love now lost
Đam mê đi hoang trên vùng trăn trối buồn
Madly meandering in a realm bequeathing us sadness
Love's wheels, after ten years they didn't arrive, from olden times until now love has always been painful

Nước mắt nuối tiếc chảy đầy trong đáy hồn
Tears of regret flow here at the soul's pit
Ưu tư em mang theo vòng tay rã rời.
Grief you bear with wearied arms
Nhớ thương từng đêm về phanh phui vết đau, ngày vui đi quá mau, ngày buồn sao kéo dài!!!
The longing each night breaks open painful wounds, the happy days passed quickly, sad ones, how they stretch out!!!

The day we fell in love, we two were not rich
Em đâu ngờ rằng tình yêu chít khăn tang
I couldn't have known that love would be wrapped in a mourning turban
Đường trần đêm đêm mắt buồn no tủi hờn, lang thang trên lối mòn vì đời không tô son.
On life's road every night sad eyes replete with annoyance, wandering on worn paths because life is not painted over

Ngày đầu yêu nhau hai đứa ước mơ trầu cau
The first day we loved we made a wish for betel and areca
Em đâu có ngờ rằng hai đứa thương đau
I could have never suspected that we'd both feel pain
Just once side by side made us love all our lives, this passion is the sad trace of regrets...

Tâm sự người lính trẻ (Confidences Of A Young Soldier) - Anh Chương, Trần Thiện Thanh (1965)

Bolero

Từ khi anh thôi học
Since I stopped my studies
Từ khi đôi đứa đôi đời
Since the pair of us have our separate lives
Từ sông ngăn núi trở
Since the rivers and mountains have blocked us
Tạ từ không nói nên lời.
Parting, unable able to speak
Since my vagabond heels have come and gone, oh such long nights, heart longing for someone.
A year searching for joy at the high mountain pass, not yet yet returning, not even one time.

Cạn đêm anh chưa ngủ.
The night's used up and I haven't slept
Lều sương hoen bóng trăng gầy.
My dewy tent splattered with light of a thin moon.
Từ khi ta cách trở.
Since we have been separated.
Kỷ niệm chưa xóa bao giờ.
A memory never yet erased.
Người ơi nếu hay rằng vì yêu, vai áo tôi bạc mầu để yên vui lối xưa.
Oh love, if you know that for love, the shoulders on my shirt fade to be peaceful and easy
Tình kia vừa nhen tim đôi lứa xin hẹn một lời dù chỉ một lời thôi.
That love kindled our hearts in our youth, let's meet to exchange a word even if there's just one word

Đầu xuân mình quen nhau.
At spring's beginning we met
Cuôi hè mình giã từ
A summer's end we parted
In autumn I followed the army to the border, coming up to winter's end, there was just once a letter
How can I hope you understand me: a soldier's life, though it has ups and downs, but love is mutual love and intimate, like the date nights where we quarreled then loved each other more.

Since I stopped my studies, loving feeling I've known enough
Đời trai chưa biết mỏi.
A man's life not yet knowing fatigue.
Ngại gì giông tố trong đời.
Why worry the tempests of life.
Cầu xin tóc em mầu xanh, xin má em còn hồng và môi em vẫn nồng
I pray your hair stays young, ask that your cheeks stay rosy and your lips are still warm
Đại dương tình yêu dâng cao sóng, xin về ngập tràn lòng chúng mình chờ mong
Love's ocean rises with high waves, please return flooding our hearts as we wait

Chiếc khăn màu tím (The Purple Scarf) - Phượng Vũ (1970)

Hôm xưa mới quen trên đường khuya
A day long ago was when I got to know the midnight road
Phố buồn ngỡ ngàng gọi tên em
Sad lanes, confused, calling out your name
When we met there were many days before love came into bloom
Em tặng anh chiếc khăn xinh.
You gave me the gift of a pretty scarf.

Màu khăn trinh nguyên như trang giấy học trò
The color of this scarf pure like a student's white pages
Many nights I caressingly dreamt the image of a girl
Suối tóc buông dài khóc miết đêm dài
Flowing hair, long, let loose, crying ceaseless through the long night
Vòng tay như đón đợi chờ tình yêu ai?
An embrace like that could be encounter, awaiting somebody's love

Then one autumn day, rain falling on the empty sidewalks
Thương em dìu bước mềm
Feelings for you, guided your soft steps
Ngập ngừng khi nói xin lòng đừng gian dối
Undecided when you told me, asked your heart not to lie
Đôi mình yêu mãi nghe em.
The two of us will be love forever dear.

Một lần yêu thương em tặng anh
A single time of love you gave me a gift
Chiếc khăn hồng mang bao ước vọng.
A rosy scarf bearing so many hopes.
My name and yours on a rosy scarf
Bền thắm duyên vợ chồng.
The durable affection of husband and wife.

Duyên xưa dở dang em gửi khăn tím buồn
When that affection of so long ago went wrong you sent me a sad purple scarf
Màu kỷ niệm đau thương
The color of painful memories
The floral carriage disappeared into the distance, one person waived goodbye with a scarf
Một người nước mắt trông theo.
Another, tearfully followed it with their eyes.

This evening, lonely longing for someone
Màu khăn năm xưa đây đâu rồi người yêu ấy
The scarf's color of years past, where is it, that love
The purple blouse crossing the bridge has probably faded a lot
Còn màu khăn kỷ niệm mình còn thương nhau.
Yet in the scarf's color in memory, we still have feelings for each other.

Giọng ca dĩ vãng (A Voice in the Past) - Bảo Thu (1967)

bolero

Ngày xưa mỗi lần em buông tiếng hát.
Days past, every time you raised your voice in song
Thì anh, tay phím nắn nốt cung đàn.
I with fingers on the frets carefully wrote the notes
Từng nhịp nhặt khoan anh ru hồn theo tiếng tơ, nhẹ dìu lời ca em thăng trầm theo từng lúc, và rồi hờn yêu em mỗi lần em hát sai, em nũng nịu cười nói: "sai là tại anh."
The beats slow down and accelerate, lull the soul with silken sounds, gently the words you sing rise and fall in time, irked whenever you sing wrong, you coax me laughing: "that was your mistake."

Nhưng em nuôi mộng ước về tương lai hoa mai giăng ngập nẻo đường em đi, rồi em đành chối tiếng giao hoà, từ ly là khúc hát đau lòng sầu muôn lối.
But you nurture a future dream, apricot flowers that engulf the road you've taken, so you are resigned reject sounds of amity, separation is heartache's song, sadness everywhere.
Ai đang xây mộng gác vàng cao sang?
Who builds a golden, noble dream?
Ai đem cung nhạc tiếng đàn gieo hoang?
Who brings the wild notes of a guitar?
Lời ca ngày đó đã xa rồi, mà sao còn chuốt mãi cung đàn vọng về tim.
The lyrics of that day have past, but why do they still burnish the guitar's notes that resound to the heart.

Giờ đây mỗi lần em buông tiếng hát.
Now, every time you raise your voice in song.
Thì ai thay thế nắn phím cung đàn?
Who will substitute, to press the guitar's frets?
The rhythms slowing and quickening, who will support your voice?
And your irked and charmed words, are they like before?
Và rồi tại ai trong mỗi lần em hát sai?
And so, who was it who made you sing wrong every time?
Cung lỡ giây chùng, mấy ai đàn đừng sai?!
Mistuned notes and slackened strings, who wouldn't play it wrong?

Xin thời gian qua mau (Please Pass Swiftly, Time) - Lam Phương (1967)

Is there a sadness sadder than tonight, a sadness sadder than tonight when outside tempests fill the skies.
Từng cánh lá cuốn gió rơi vào lòng đêm thâu thương thầm mối tình Ngâu.
Each leaf twists in the wind, falling into the long night secretly pitying an unconsummated love.
Ngày về ôi xa quá, cánh nhạn còn miệt mài trong nắng hồng mê say.
The day of return, oh so far off, when the wild goose is absorbed in intoxicating rosy sunlight.
Lạc bầy chim chíu chít hai phương trời cách biệt đêm chờ và đêm mong.
Astray from the twittering flock, two separate horizons, nights waiting, expectant nights.

Ta đã quen, quen từng hơi thở quen tiếng cười và sóng mắt đưa tin.
I've known, known breaths, known laughter, shining expressive eyes.
Tám mùa đông cây rừng khô trụi lá, chưa bao giờ một phút sống xa nhau.
Eight winters, dried jungle trees bare of leaves, never yet a minute living far from each other.
Thương những đêm trăng tà soi xóm vắng, đưa nhau về anh viết thành bài ca.
Regretting evenings, the setting sun shining on the deserted village, leading each other home I've written out a song
Thương những khi trưa hè nghiêng nắng đổ hắt hiu buồn tiếng võng nhè nhẹ đưa.
Regretting summer noon's sunlight at an angle streaming, the gentle sounds of a rocking hammock.

Is there sadness sadder than tonight, sadness sadder than tonight when love in its spring dries into life's dust.
Nhiều lúc muốn trách móc hay giận hờn vu vơ chỉ làm phí ngày thơ.
Many times I want to blame or resent for no reason but it's only wasting innocence.
Dù rằng sau mưa bão, gió hiền hòa lại về vẫn thấy lòng hoang vu.
Though after the rainstorms, gentle breezes return to desolate heart.
Cuộc đời là hư vô bôn ba chi xứ người khi mình còn đôi tay.
Life is nothingness and ambition only an alien land when we still have a pair of hands.

Hương xưa (A Long Ago Fragrance) - Vũ Hoàng, ý thơ: Cao Vũ Huy Miên (1995-97?)

I don't understand why we have this afternoon
Gặp lại nhau và bỗng dưng em khóc
Meeting and suddenly you cry
Giọt nước mắt anh làm sao ngăn được
These tears, how can I hold them back
Em bây giờ như xa một tầm tay
Now it's like you are at arm's length
Em bây giờ như xa một tầm tay
Now it's like you are at arm's length

What can be said when love has faded
Tháng mười hai trời còn mưa buồn
December, rain still sadly falls
Anh bâng khuâng đứng lặng ở cuối đường
Melancholy, I stand silently at the road's end
There's no reason to hold each other responsible

Khi trái tim không cùng suy nghĩ
When hearts don't think together
Đốt làm chi những tờ thư cũ
Why burn those old letters
Xóa được không kỷ niệm mênh mông
Erase those vast memories
Rồi mai này anh sẽ yêu ai.
Then tomorrow, who will I love

Tình yêu ấy nghìn lần không đơn giản
That love, a thousand times it wouldn't have been easy
Tình yêu ấy còn chút gì lãng mạn
That love, there's a little romance left
To send to the girl who loves me
Để gởi về người con gái yêu ai...
To send to the girl who loves someone

Kỷ niệm (Memories) - Cao Vũ Huy Miên (1985)

Anh xa em thật rồi
I'm very far from you
bỏ lại sau lưng chuỗi ngày dài mùa hạ
casting behind me a string of long summer days
casting from behind bunches of flowers in bloom
trên con đường mà chúng ta vẫn thường qua
upon the roads that we often crossed

I don't understand why we have this afternoon
gặp lại nhau và bỗng dưng em khóc
meeting and suddenly you cry
giọt nước mắt, anh làm sao ngăn đuợc
These tears, how can I hold them back
em bây giờ như xa một tầm tay
Now it's like you are at arm's length

Em đi về giờ đã có người đưa
You've gone home now in someone's company
anh ngơ ngác để làm rơi cả nón
confused I even knocked off my hat
tháng mười sao trời còn mưa muộn
October, why is there late rain
anh lang thang rồi đứng ở cuối đường
I wander, end up standing at the road's end

There's no reason to keep blaming you
em đã sống cho anh nhiều quá
you lived for me so much
đốt làm chi những tờ thư cũ
no reason to burn old letters
so I would feel at peace at giving up

Để mai này anh sẽ yêu ai
So tomorrow who will I love
tình yêu ấy nghìn lần không đơn giản
that love a thousand times would not be simple
tình yêu ấy là chút gì lãng mạn
that love a thousand times there was just a bit of romance
it was sacrifice, it was sharing in life
Là bây giờ anh biết đơn côi
it's now I know solitude

Biệt kinh kỳ (Farewell to the imperial capital) - Minh Kỳ & Hoài Linh (1961)

Dedicated to the boys who put down their pens to follow the art of war

Bạn ơi! quan hà xin cạn chén ly bôi,
Friends! to the frontier I ask you to down a farewell drink,
Ngày mai tôi đã đã đi xa rồi.
Tomorrow I will already be gone.
Thành đô lưu luyến chắn bước chân tôi trước giờ chia phôi mấy ai không bùi ngùi kỷ niệm buồn vui mãi ghi trong hồn tôi.
The town slackens my steps before the moment of departing, there isn't anyone who isn't melancholy with memories happy and sad forever etched in my soul.

Rồi đây mai ngày ai hỏi đến tên tôi,
From now on if anyone asks about me,
Bạn ơi! hãy nói "khoác chiến y" rồi.
Friends! say I've "thrown on a warrior's uniform."
This student has put down his pen, bid farewell to his beloved school with many kind friends to return when the land is peaceful and happy...

Nhớ lúc lên đường đưa tiễn chân tôi, thương lên khoé mắt mẹ nhắn đôi lời, diệt thù lập công cho xứng tài trai, sắt son ghi lòng, chớ phai.
Remembering when I hit the road when they bid farewell, sorrow for the corner of mother's eyes with her few words of advice, wipe out the enemy earn merit fitting for a capable lad, be true, swear to your heart, don't forget.

Ai đi chinh chiến xây đắp tương lai, con đi chinh chiến để nước yên vui lời mẹ hiền khuyên nguyền khắc trong tim bao giờ dám quên.
Many go to war to build the future, I go to war so that land is happy and peaceful, kind mother's words advice I have vowed and etched in my heart, I'd never dare forget.

Bạn ơi! khi nào ai hỏi đến tên tôi.
Friends! whenever anyone asks about me.
Đời tôi lính chiến cánh chim tung trời.
My life as a fighting warrior is taking wings hurling to the heavens.
Ngày nào khi đất nước hết binh đao giữa đoàn hùng binh có tôi đi hàng đầu, trở về thành đô nắm tay ta mừng nhau.
One day when the land has no more warfare, among a troupe of heroes I will be in front, returning to town, clasping hands as we celebrate together.

Người đi chiều ấy áo nhuộm bụi đường
The person who left that day, shirt dyed in the dust of the road
Chiều nay về giữa kinh kỳ say hương.
Today returns midst an elated imperial capital.

Mưa đêm ngoại ô (Rainy Night At the Outskirts) - Đỗ Kim Bảng (1960)

Trời đã khuya rồi đấy, trăng chênh chếch xuyên ánh qua mành,
Heaven's dark midnight, the moon slants spreading its light past the blinds,
Heaven has rained, raining upon a hamlet far from the city lights.
The road out there is not noisy, not pretty with colored lights, oh the long road deep into dark night!
Bước chân ai qua mau dưới mưa nghe nao nao lẫn tiếng còi tàu thét lâu.
Whose footsteps quickly pass in the rain feeling unease with the long shriek of the train whistle.

Nằm giữa đêm ngoại ô nghe mưa rớt trên khóm tre già,
Lying down at night in the outskirts hearing rain trickle on the old bamboo bush,
Inwardly remember someone out there who is fighting for our homeland.
Người anh tôi không quen ơi,
My man who I cannot forget,
Forest rain returns, flooding the heavens, rain why do you soak my man's clothes.
Đến mai khi nơi nơi gió im mưa thôi rơi mời anh qua làng tôi.
When tomorrow comes and everywhere the wind quiets and rain ceases I invite to come past my village.

Đây ngoại ô nhạt ánh đèn khuya;
Here in the outskirts, the faded light of midnight;
Đèn vàng hiu hắt soi con đường mờ mờ bóng mưa,
Weak yellow lamps light the road in the rain's dim shine
Nhưng tin yêu thắm lòng ta.
But faith and love warm our hearts.
Xin tặng anh người trai vì dân
Please I present you, a man of the people
A loving girl's smile, with affection like spring's light,
Mang theo anh nhé lúc hành quân...
Bring it with you when you're on the march...

So that those night of dark midnight, rain dripping it count out the long watch,
Ở chốn xa ngoài kia nơi biên giới sương khuất cây đồi,
Far off there, at the border, mist obscures the hill's trees,
My unforgotten man, on the road putting down the enemy, if suddenly your heart feels warms from afar
Gió mang ra biên khu mến trao anh câu ca một đêm mưa ngoại ô...
A breeze brought to the frontier, fondly presents you words of the song of a rainy song of the outskirts...

Không phải tại chúng mình (It's Not Our Faults) - Ngọc Văn & Thương Linh (1969)

BOLERO

Giang Tử [GT] và Trang Mỹ Dung [TMD] ca

GT: Không phải tại Em
It's not Your fault
TMG: cũng không phải tại Anh
Nor is it Yours
It was heaven that caused us to love one another
TMD: Tình nồng thắm biết bao lúc Ông Tơ bắc cầu Bà Nguyệt nối chữ yêu vui trọn buổi ban đầu
A love so passionate, when the Thread Man built his bridge the Moon Lady connected love and happiness completely at that first time
Rồi thời gian lướt mau
Then time quickly fleeted past
GT: Tình ta úa màu
Our love faded
The lute's frets rose sadly full of pain when our love became parched, it's not Your fault or Mine.

Tình yêu!
Love!
Love is like a beautiful at Spring's arrival my love!

(Being a flower for someone to pick)

GT: Hè sang sắc thắm hoa dần tàn
Summer comes, the flower's hue gradually fades

TMD & GT: Thu đến nghẹn ngào
Autumn's arrival choked with tears
Rồi heo may kéo sang mùa Đông làm hoa kia chết trong lạnh lùng.
Then the northwest wind brings Winter killing that flower in its cold.

GT: Không phải tại Em
It's not Your fault
TMD: cũng không phải tại Anh
Nor is it Yours
it's because life's black and white that we have to be far apart.
TMD: Mình từng nói đã lâu
We have said for so long
Dấu đi chung chuyến tàu
In love on the same voyage

We left on different docks with no plans to meet again anywhere
Thì ngày nay có sao
So today what is there
I don't blame another and I don't blame myself, life has changes like a blouse's color, it's not Your fault nor is it Mine.
